In a sports world focused on rough and tumble sports like hockey, football, and soccer, synchronized swimming is like a breath of fresh air. It is a sport in which 99% of the athletes are female. Synchronized Swimming can be compared to figure skating in that the athletes must master and perform "figures" or compulsory components that are then put together in the performance of a routine. Swimmers are judged both on their skill level in the execution of the compulsory figures as well as the performance of their routine. It is a sport that requires the athlete to have the strength of a weight lifter, the endurance of a competitive swimmer, the precision of a diver, the flexibility of a gymnast and the finesse and grace of a ballerina. The end product is a performance that the spectator can truly appreciate!
Killarney offers a pre-competitive as well as a competitive program. The goal of the pre-competitive program is to introduce swimmers to Synchronized Swimming and develop skills which will prepare them for the competitive program. Swimmers will learn basic sculling skills and Synchro positions as well as a routine which they will perform at the year end Watershow. Swimmers may try out our pre-competitive program at any time during the swim season.
Competitive programs
Wildrose Program
Athletes in the Wildrose program compete at a provincial level and train 8 to 10 hours a week, beginning in September and finishing in June. The program consists of 5 Tier levels where swimmers will get the opportunity to further develop their synchronized swimming skills as they progress through the Tier levels. Swimmers will get the opportunity to compete in approximately 4 to 5 regional and provincial competitions throughout the season.
National Age Group Program
Athletes in the National Age group program will compete provincially and nationally. Swimmers spend 10 hours a week training in the pool and 2-3 hours a week in strength and flexability. The program begins in September and finishes in June. At this level, athletes are very skilled and will compete in 4 to 5 competitions. Athletes may get the opportunity to travel to different locations in Western and Eastern Canada.
OUR GOALS ARE:
To provide development of synchronized swimming skills through instruction, practise and participation in major sanctioned competitions, to the best of each swimmers abilities.
To enhance individual growth of each swimmer, focusing on self esteem, responsibility, leadership and physical fitness.
To foster an environment in which swimmers, coaches and parents can actively participate in team and club activities.
To encourage the promotion and enjoyment of the sport of synchronized swimming, both as an individual and team member.
To have memorable experiences that build positive character.
